For example, in RN "control-G" skips to the next section of a digest; and in NN, "G%" presents material as a digest. Sections in this document may also be located by searching for the desired section number string (e.g. "-1-") from the list above. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: WIDLIST -1- Subject: What is a Listserv? A listserv is a public or private electronic mailing list. People who "subscribe" to, or "unsubscribe" from, a listserv ask that their E-Mail addresses be added or deleted from the mailing list. Listserv is a way of sending one notice to many different people on many different computer systems. Listservs are one of the more popular ways to quickly disseminate information, share opinions, and get advice through the Internet. When you subscribe to a listserv you will get a copy of every message sent to the list in your electronic mailbox. You will also have the ability to send your messages to all other subscribers by sending them to one, central address for quick, electronic distribution to everyone on the list. There are thousands of lists on a very wide range of topics on the Internet. WIDLIST includes all the listservs relating to disability we know of. Please let us know if you discover any others by sending mail to widnet@delphi.com so we can add them to the next edition of WIDLIST. Some listservs are moderated. This means that someone, usually the person known as the "list owner," reads all messages submitted for distribution and decides which to forward to all subscribers and which to reject for some reason. When a listserv is unmoderated, distribution of submissions is usually automatic. From: WIDLIST -2- Subject: How to Subscribe to a Listserv There is a standard way to subscribe (or unsubscribe) from most listservs. Some lists, however, do not use the standard convention, so be sure to take note of any instructions given for subscribing. Here's the standard procedure: 1.) Send electronic mail to the appropriate electronic address as it is given in WIDLIST; 2.) Leave the Subject line of your message blank; 3.) Identify yourself and what you want in your message in just four words all on one line like this: subscribe [list name] your.first.name your.last.name unsubscribe [list name] your.first.name your.last.name Here's an example. In this example, Janina Sajka is sending Internet mail from WIDnet asking to be added to Project EASI's list: To: internet"listserv@sjuvm.stjohns.edu" Subj: Enter your message below. The list is open to all interested subscribers and will be unmoderated (for now anyway). Because there are already listservers related specifically to the Americans with Disabilities Act legislation and assistive technology for post-secondary education audiences, this list will hopefully be a little different. First, it will focus specifically on adaptive technology - both low tech and high tech (low tech including ramps, door handles, etc.). Second, public, school, and special library staff members are encouraged to subscribe. Many of the online resources related to assistive technology focus on the post-secondary education audience so this is an effort to diversify a bit. The list will be a place to: ask (and answer) adaptive technology-related reference questions; share thoughts on new (or old) adaptive devices; share information about design manufacturers and/or consultants; comment on any issues relating to adaptive technology in libraries. This includes the study of the use of gesture or gesticulation in everyday conversations, formal or conventionalized gestures known as "emblems" or "quotable gestures", "gesture systems" such as have been described for work settings of various kinds (stock markets, race tracks, factories, and the like) and alternate sign languages, (sign languages used in hearing communities as an alternative to speech) such as those used among the Australian Aborigines, the Plains Indians of North America, in certain European monastries, and other groups. It is hoped that the Forum will make possible the development of a wide range of cultural and social comparisons in gesture use. The Forum begins operation without a moderator and is open to all, subject to subscription approval by the Listowner (see below). The Forum is the joint initiative of the Coombs Computing Unit, Research Schools of Social Sciences & Pacific and Asian Studies, The Australian National University, and Dr Adam Kendon , Research Associate, Center for Urban Ethnography, Graduate School of Education University of Pennsylvania, USA. [Mailing address for Kendon is 43 West Walnut Lane, Philadelphia, PA 19144 USA]. Participants are free to join and leave the Forum at any time. We can discuss what mobility is. It is not just access to public transportation. It is also our ability to get around using wheelchairs, and our own cars or vans. It is also about integrating into society -- finding equal access and changing attitudes and stereotypes. 2. Mobility also means communications. Sharing ideas and feelings. What are your feelings about disability and being disabled? 3. We can also use Mobility to inform each other about helpful adaptive software, speech synthesizers -- anything that will help persons with disabilities live more independently. 4. Mobility will also be discussed as it relates to socializing and dating. 5. And we will also be discussing education and employment and how it relates to mobility. 6. Finally, on Mobility you will have the opportunity to help us with your views and news on mobility and any aspects of disability. I hope you will tell everyone you know about our Mobility List, and tell them to subscribe to it today. Please help spread the word about this Mobility List. Post in on other Internet Lists and on other BBSs. To Join Mobility, send e-mail to: listserv@sjuvm.stjohns.edu Send the message: sub mobility yourfname lname Here's a bit about myself and what I do. As you know, my name is Robert Mauro, I'm 47, born in New York City on 9/25/46. In 1973 I moved out to Long Island. I contracted polio at age 5 in 1951. I use a respirator and an electric wheelchair. I do all my computing lying down, not being able to sit at a desk for long periods of time as a result of 3 spinal fusions in 1960-61. I received my B.A. (in Sociology) in 1976 from Hofstra University on Long Island. That year I made my first professional sale as a writer. Since then I've had four books published. The first is called TWO CHARACTER PLAYS FOR STUDENT ACTORS, and it has an introduction by Gary Burghoff, who plays Radar on M*A*S*H. My second book is called ON STAGE! SHORT PLAYS FOR ACTING STUDENTS, and it has been endorsed by the First Lady of the American Theatre, noted actress Helen Hayes. They are available from MERIWETHER PUBLISHING, LTD., Box 7710, Colorado Springs, CO 80933. I've also sold over 150 plays and articles I edit and publish PeopleNet, my own international personals/networking newsletter by and for disabled singles. I've been doing that since August of 1987, and so far we've had some marriages as a result of couples meeting each other via PeopleNet. I presently write the "Computer Talk" column for disabled computer users in Able Newspaper. I have written a booklet called "Computer Literacy By & For Disabled Persons," available for $2 from PeopleNet. >From 1986-1987 I wrote a monthly computer column for THE VOICE OF THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED. >From 1982 to the present I've been a consultant at the Long Island Center for Independent Living, Inc. where I maintain their computer. My main interests and occupation is writing. The following books are to be published by Accent on Living in the Spring of 1994. They will be available then from PeopleNet, POB 897, Levittown, NY 11756-0911. My fourth book, FINDING LOVE AND INTIMACY, has just been released and it is the best of my international personals newsletter for disabled singles, PeopleNet. In my new book you'll read articles, short stories, book reviews, and poems -- plus some material never before seen. All are about sexuality and romance for the disabled single, or any single. Published by Accent On Living Special Publications, FINDING LOVE AND INTIMACY will help you indeed find love -- if you read it. Some of those who have read my work in PeopleNet have already married as a result of what they've learned from my writing. Copies of FINDING LOVE AND INTIMACY are available for $8.95 plus $1 shipping and handling from PeopleNet, POB 897, Levittown, NY 11756-0911. Co-written with Elle Becker, who wrote LOVE: WHERE TO FIND IT, HOW TO KEEP IT, my third book HOW TO LIVE LONGER WITH A DISABILITY has been extensively researched and well documented. It will tell you how your disability might change with age. Besides chapters on Sexuality, Medications, Psychology, and Benefits programs, you'll read about how the aging process can affect a disabled person's job, energy level, sexuality, interpersonal relationships, and his or her general quality of life. You'll learn about just what psychological effects disabled persons might be feeling as they grow older. Depression, denial, anxiety, loneliness are all discussed. And ways of dealing successfully with these emotions. You'll also read the personal testimony of disabled men and women, who tell how they cope with disability and aging. The boLok has an extensive bibliography and is excellent reading for friends, family, spouses, doctors and counselors -- everyone who lives, loves or works with disabled men and women. And it was written by two extensively published authors who know disability and aging well. For your copy, send $11.50 plus $1 shipping and handling to PeopleNet. Add $1 for each book if you're from a foreign country. Robert Mauro, Mobility List Owner rmauro@delphi.com +++MRDEAF-L Please note the formation of a new mailing list called MRDEAF-L. STUT-HLP is intended to be a support list for people who stutter and their families. It is *not* intended to be an academic discussion list, since other lists (stutt-l stutt-x) currently exist to serve that purpose. The idea for STUT-HLP grew from my observation that the current lists that are available for stuttering seem to serve the needs of academics rather than people who stutter. I don't feel that this is intentional, but it happens nonetheless. STUT-HLP will be for individuals who stutter, and the observations of these individuals will not be inhibited by theoretical discussions of stuttering. I think we all can agree that the way that stuttering is approached by the person who stutters is often different from that of the person who *treats* stutterers. SLPs and other professionals are welcome to join the list and to "listen to" and consider what is said by the participants. However, I will discourage anyone who uses the list as a forum to promote a particular approach to therapy, or who attempts to diminish the seriousness or importance of what any list participant has to say. Here are the details, courtesy of Scott Rust: On July 26 at 9:30 a.m., the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and Finance will hold the first Congressional hearing ever held over a computer network. The oversight hearing on "The Role of Government in Cyberspace" will take place in the Grand Ballroom of the National Press Club at 14th and F Streets, NW, Washington, DC. The hearing is open to the public. An open house will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on the same day in the same location and is also open to the public. Thirty Sparcstations will be in the hearing room, allowing members of Congress, staff, and their guests to read e-mail, use Gopher menus, read testimony in WAIS databases, browse the World Wide Web, and otherwise use the resources of the global Internet as part of the hearing. Some witnesses for the hearing will testify remotely, sending audio and video over the Internet. Audio and video of the hearing will also be multicast over the Multicast Backbone (MBONE). C-SPAN and other traditional media are expected to carry the event as well. One of the primary points that the sponors hope to demonstrate is the diversity and size of the Internet. The original idea, due to Rick Gates, was for volunteers to cooperatively write a new encyclopedia, put it in the public domain, and make it available on the Internet. Participants on the mailing-list have expanded the concept by noting that the bibliography entries and references provided with Interpedia articles could include hypertext links to other resources available on the Internet. Unlike any printed encyclopedia, the Interpedia could be kept completely up-to-date. Indeed, it could include hypertext links to ongoing discussions, and perhaps evolve into a general interface to all resources and activities on the Internet. If you find these ideas interesting, please join the Interpedia mailing-list by sending a message to interpedia-request@telerama.lm.com with the body of the message containing the word 'subscribe' and your e-mail address, as follows: subscribe your_username@your.host.domain Owner: Doug Luce interpedia-request@telerama.lm.com Interpedia List Maintainer Telerama Public Access Internet +++KID.MEDIA kid.media@airwaves.chi.il.us KID MEDIA DISCUSSION LIST The Kid Media Mailing List is a list (started Nov 23 1993) dedicated to the furtherment of communications between people interested in, or involved in, the creation, production, distribution and/or consumption of media who's primary target audience is children. For the sake of inclusiveness, the list is defining 'children' and anyone under the age of 18 years, although most of the media to which this list is targeted would be aimed primarily at those under 12. Since this is a very new endevour, the limits and actual scope of the list are yet to be determined. But as a general rule, Kid Media is open to any constructive traffic on the topic. We are counting on the participants to bring the list to life, as it is being run as a tool of communication and not a podium for one or two so-called 'experts'. Some of the topics suggested for discussion are (but not limited to).. # Children's Public Television programs and their impact # Commercial Children's Television and its impact # The rising trend of "Children's Radio" Such as 'Radio AAHS" and how that is impacting the overall Children's Media situation. # Kid's Music and Musicians. # Producing CLhildren's media. # Cartoons Today and Yesterday. # Separating Fiction and Illusion from Reality in Kids Media. # The role of computers and computer animation in Kids media. # How Kids Media deals with Societal Issues like AIDS, Sexuality Family problems, Abuse, Racism, Drugs, Self-Esteem, etc. # How do Families view the role of Kids Media? # How so-called 'adult' or mainstream media affects kids. # The Selling of our Children.. Commercials aimed at selling products to kids and to parents via the influence of their kids. # Education via media. # Kids movies and videos. How and why are they made? # Contemporary re-makes of classic fairy tales (like Aladdin, etc). # How media does (or does not) effect children and what is being done in that arena? # Current and future trends in the industry. These are just some concIepts off the top of my head and from those sent in by interested parties. The scope and direction of this list is still mostly un-formed and up to the participants to determine by their posts. The list is an unmoderated reflector-type where articles are resent almost immediately upon being received at the reflector site. However, the list is monitored, and although the direction has not been cast in stone, we do want to make a couple of ground rules right off the bat. This list was originally designed to offer those involved in the creation of kids media an opportunity to talk among themselves about matters pertaining to their craft(s). Later it seemed appropriate to not limit or restrict the membership to just kid media professionals, but to open it to the public at large. None the less, it is our intent to keep the list from becoming a flame-fest or a place to air "I Hate Barney" types of messages, or other non-constructive traffic. Obviously disagreements will occur and that is fine, but understand that there is a fine line between disagreeing with a poster's opinion and flaming the poster personally. Since we hSave media professionals on the list already and hope to attract more, we do not wish to take up bandwidth on personal holy-wars and irreconcilable arguments. In short we would like to keep the brain to baloney ratio as high as we can. Those who insist on taking personal insults and flames to the list at large, will be denied access. Please do not make this necessary. We ask that those on the list conduct themselves in an intelligent manner, even while disagreeing and arguing points of opinion. Other than that, the podium is yours. We would like everyone on the list to post a self-introduction so we can all become acquainted. Many have included that in their subscribe message, but now that the list is functional, why not post it? Tell everyone what you do and why Children's media is of interest to you. Also, spread the word. there is no reasonable limit to the number of list members and the more the merrier. We all look forward to a spirited and educational time here. Here are the addresses for the kid media list. Please keep these handy or assign them to aliases in elm or whatever mailer you use. If you receive a number of mailinglists, ask me about filter programs which can assign different mailboxes for different types of mail, thereby keeping your main mailbox from getting too cluttered. *** LIST ADDRESSES *** * To Subscribe/Unsubscribe or get a help file -- Send to: kid.media-request@airwaves.chi.il.us . WID is active in the local, state, national, and international arenas. WID believes that people with disabilities best know their own needs and how to address them. A majority of WID's staff and a majority of its Board of Directors are people with disabilities. From: WIDLIST -6- Subject: Appendix B: About WID's Online Resources World Institute on Disability announces: An Electronic Metamorphosis: From WIDnet to WID.ORG In brief: WIDnet on Delphi will close in early January 1995 WID's online resources will move to a new Internet address Three years ago, the World Institute on Disability (WID) created an online service called WIDnet to provide telecommunication and information services to disability advocates and others interested in disability policy issues. WIDnet became an important resource for many people. But much has changed in the past three years. So in a continuing effort to provide the best possible service to all parts of the disability community, WID is completely renovating its online presence to make WID's information as accessible as possible, to as many people as possible, in as many places as possible. In early 1995 our new service will be available to anyone anywhere who has Internet access, at the Internet site wid.org. ~ Our new service will be free. No subscription will be required beyond what you already pay your Internet service provider for Internet access. ~ Our new service will not require usernames and passwords. It will simply be available to anyone with Internet access, from their Internet service provider of choice, using their Internet access technology of choice. ~ All current subscribers to WIDnet will continue to have full access to WID's online resources through Delphi Internet Services, as they do today. WIDnet on Delphi, however, will close when the new service opens. ~ WID's online resources will now also be available to subscribers of AOL, Compuserve, and the host of other companies, universities, and other organizations providing Internet services to their users. ~ WID will no longer provide dialup access to its own information resources, or to Internet services. To access WID's online publications you will need to use an Internet service provider. We recognize that these changes may be disruptive for some people, especially those of you who like using WIDnet on Delphi. Our new service will still be accessible to you through the same interfaces you're already accustomed to, but they will also be available to many people who are uncomfortable with the current interface on WIDnet. Our new service will, in short, provide access to WID's online resources through the user's interface of choice. This is one of our main reasons for making these changes. We hope you'll like them and use our new service often. Watch for the announcement of our new service, and for your invitation to attend our electronic house-warming at our new Internet address -- @wid.org.
